Awkward and Awesome: It's Not All In Vain

AWKWARD

-The fact that it's still in the 90-something degrees outside at 11PM. WTH!?

-Having an 8AM class on Saturday mornings. Why me!? I just want to sleep. Who in their right mind would do some foolishness like this!?

-Not being in DC this weekend. My girls are gone. My boo is gone. And I know that they are having loads of fun. Ughhh, I'm jealous.

-Seeing people that I know in the thrift store. That bothers me because they try to hold conversations and stuff when I really don't feel like it. I just want to get to the next aisle. Please and Thank You!

AWESOME

-Being featured on DistinctStyleInnovation for this week's Wear*It Wednesday segment. Check out how we rock our wedges and also read about how you can be featured in upcoming posts.

-A preview of my DIY manicure. Get your pretty manicures ready ladies because in 2 weeks, on August 12, I will be hosting FBFF- a collaborative forum initially started by Katy from ModlyChic. On that very day, I would love for each and every one of  you to link up and share your DIY manicures with me. Pretty please! I've seen some pretty creative ideas floating around the 'net thus far so I wanna see what 'cha got!

WOTS: Nothing Makes Me More Happy...

In the midst of life and the hustle and bustle of daily activities, we sometimes neglect or maybe even forget to take time out to do the things that we love-the things that make us happy. We forget to do us, and instead focus on making those around us comfortable. Not that there's anything wrong with pleasing those around you, but you must first take time out to make yourself happy because realistically it is us who matters the most. Not selfishly so, but after you give thanks to your higher being of choice (mine happens to be God), you must put yourself first.

Well, sometimes it's okay to be selfish. Sometimes you have to be selfish. Most times this is the way to be just to ensure that people don't run the hell over you. And take advantage of your kindness. After all, in the end, you're the only one that has to deal with you. So if you finagle around and engage in things that you hate, because someone else wants you to do so, then who's gonna lose in the end? You got it! YOU!

Spending time with my bestie makes me HAPPY!

'Word On the Street' is that happiness is being discussed by some of my favorite chics this week. Sarah over at GetUpandGo talks about ditching rules to maintain happiness in her house. I love that because life isn't all about rules all the time.

Margaritas, Mexican food, and wearing the same shoes as bestie makes me HAPPY!

I hate a square! Always uptight and by the book. Bend the rules a bit and live a little more freely. I promise it will take loads off! Don't sweat the small stuff by arguing over pointless matters. This is especially true in relationships. We often set our expectations wayyy too high (yes there is a such thing). I mean, don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with knowing what you want but don't be unrealistic. . We expect our partners, friends, whomever, to do certain things and then when they don't pull through, we're upset and ready to argue. Understand that the flesh is weak and people are bound to screw up.

Beautiful surroundings make me HAPPY!

So if you create happiness for yourself all of this can be avoided. Don't expect people to do for you what you can do for yourself. Does this mean that you have to exhibit a higher level of independence-YES, YES, YES!

My girl Keren over at TwoStylishKays compares life to a 'smooth sailing' boat. Yes girl, we are the captains of our own ship.  So when we speak about happiness, we must first look to ourselves. We can't point the finger at anyone else and blame them for our anger, fear, hurt, pain, guilt, or unhappiness. No one has control over our feelings but us. We are the only one's responsible. And until we are happy with ourselves, we will never be happy with anyone else.

Vest&Tank-Old Navy/Wedges-Target/Scalloped Shorts-DIY & Thrifted

So today, if you are feeling unhappy about the way someone treated you go to them with an open mind and discuss the issue. Instead of saying "You made me feel...." say, "I feel this way because..." In doing this you are shifting responsibility back to yourself. If you are feeling unhappy about the path your life has taken thus far, go out and do something spontaneous, something fun, something unexpected. Abandon every single rule in the book, if only for just this one time.

FBFF: Just Throw It in the Bag...

I have an obsession...with shoes...with clothes...and with purses! I need the big ones too. The ones that you stuff all of your junk into and  then struggle when you get to the cash register at your favorite store to look for the loose change that has found it's way to the tiniest crack at the bottom of the purse. I like clutches too. However, they are oftentimes not big enough to fit everything that I would like them to. They definitely fall into the 'statement pieces' category. They are like an addition to your outfit and I definitely don't wear them as a regular outfit piece. I like to carry too much junk around-just in case I may need something. What about the vintage ones? I've never really been into Coach much but I love the hell out of a classic Dooney and Bourke. There's just something about them that's timeless. The new age ones are too fancy for me. Some things are just better with simplicity.

Marie-Eve over at APrettyNest asked to take a look into my bag on Friday. Actually a ton of us got together over here to share exactly what we had in our bags this weekend.

So here's my favorite vintage Dooney and Bourke

Thrifted Dooney and Bourke

And this is a general idea of what I carry in it

Just general stuff-comb, iPhone, the mini Crown Royal bag that doubles as a change purse, lotion, sanitizer, lip stuff (I love lip stuff), gum, petty cash, ID, fragrance oil, and my blog journal. I carry these items everywhere, no matter the size of the purse. These are my essentials.

What's your favorite type of bag?

And what do you carry in your bag?

You can link up and share 'what's in your bag' here.

Savin' Maven Monday: The Shoes on my Feet-I've Bought It...

Good Monday my beauties....

My first matter of business today is to give a very special 'Thank You' to all of my readers for always coming to visit me and taking time to comment on my 'lil blog. Shouts out to all of my bad a$$ followers! You all ROCK! I reached 100 followers at some point this weekend and for me that is HUGE! I hope that I can continue to provide new and interesting material for you to read and comment on. I appreciate you more than you know.

Now...let's get straight down to business.

I'm not sure if all of you have a Target in your area or if you even shop at Target for that matter BUT the  Target here had the most awesomest ---->(definitely just made up another word) clearance sale in all of HISTORY this past week! I'm assuming that they are preparing to move their fall items in. I don't know, I don't even care! As long as they continue to have sales like the one I experienced I'm all about some
Tar-jay!

I've had my eye on these since I first saw Kendi with them on:

Dolce Vita Wedges for Target
However, me being the thrifty chic that I am I wasn't pressed to pay $29.99 for them. Sooooo....I waited!  They eventually went down to 50% off a couple of weekends ago and I 'bout died.  Well, my sister called me at 10:32 on Thursday morning (mind you my sister NEVER calls me at 10:32 in the morning) and told me to get my a$$ to Target immediately because all of the shoes had gone down to 75% off. I died-forreal this time! I made it to the store faster than I blinked 3 times. Katy from ModlyChic asked me just the other day if I had sworn off retail shopping all together soooooo for my very first 'retail' edition of Savin' Maven Monday, here's my haul:

My greatest shopping trip yet!
You guys! OMG! Now I'm not sure if the stores in your area have begun marking things down yet because there are some stores in my area who have yet to mark their things down to 50% off; so if you're a faithful Target shopper, please keep your eyes open for this sale. I got 7, SEVEN, 7 pairs of shoes (I grabbed every shoe that I could find in my size) and a buttload of socks (using most of them for gifts).

My total for this trip was $224.43
My out of pocket total was $63.49
For a total savings of $159.94 (71% savings)

This is alot more than I usually spend on weekly shopping but I thought it was waaayyyyy more than worth it!

Ladies, what do you think?

Did you find any great deals this past week?

Awkward and Awesome: I'm Feeling Good...This is The Best Week of My Life

AWKWARD

-Don't rude people bother you?

-Being stuck in the house on a Friday doing homework. What type of crap is that?

-DMV-the Department of Motor Vehicles. I went to get my license renewed this week and they told me that I had to have a birth certificate to prove that I'm a US citizen. C'mon....are you serious. Like WTF!? Doesn't my 'soon to expire' license do a good enough job of proving that I'm a freaking resident. That's a load of bull.

-Going back to DMV after a 3 day long search for my birth certificate only for them to tell me that my license renewal would be $32! Confuse me...WHAT!? Since when...who approved this...for WHHYY? I remember when things like this used to be free. My goodness, by the time I have kids old enough to drive, there's gonna be an entry fee just to get into the damn DMV!
How do you feel about the DMV in your hometown?

-Men. And how they are sometimesmost times more moody than us. Ugghhh, the nerve of them to call us emotional.

Tattoos being unacceptable within the work environment. (Extensive details to follow in a later post)

AWESOME

-Having an interview on Monday. Getting a call back on Tuesday. Signing my new contract on Wednesday. This has to be thee best week of my life. God is soooo good.

-My bestie is in town. Ahhhhhh....Can't wait for a shopping spree! Yayyy!!!

-Crackle nail polish is the ish. How many of you agree? I keep looking down at my nails in complete awe of the added effect of the 'crackle'!

-Being featured on NoGuiltFashion for Danie's What They Wore Wednesday segment. Check out how we rocked our rompers and jumpsuits.

-And theeennnn finding out that my post was featured on this week's Links a la Mode roundup over at IFB. I'm hella excited:

Style is what you make it. We are all different and beautiful in our own ways. Many of us have different techniques to display how we want to present ourselves. Some people are very "structured" "prim and proper" and live by a color scheme while others go wild with mixing patterns and have the "unpolished" and "don't care" look. It's all about where you get your inspiration from and your personality in general.

Here are some classic quotes on style:

  • "Fashion fades, style is eternal." -YSL
  • "Fashion is not something that exist only in dresses. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." -Coco Chanel
  • "'Style' is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style." -John Fairchild
What's your favorite style quote?

WOTS: Still Respected When It's Vintage (feature)

Have you ever found yourself in the middle of the thrift store's vintage section-completely amazed by the timeless pieces, the quality of the fabrics, and the intricate details of the perfectly tailored dresses. I've noticed that the items I find in the vintage section exhibit a certain level of chic and they have 'first lady' written all over them. Great silky fabrics, bow tie necklines, and below the knee midi skirts. Did you then double back and stop to wonder what the hell does 'vintage' really mean? Have you ever wondered if thrifting and vintage shopping means the same thing to people from other countries? Do they value it there as much as we do here?

Well I've teamed up with one of my favorite UK bloggers, Franca from OrangesAndApples, to discuss the aspect of 'charity shopping' and exactly what the terms 'vintage' and thrifting mean to her.

Everyone say hello to Franca.

florals, jeans and yellow

Miss Rockwell (MR): Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Franca (F): I'm Franca. I live in Edinburgh, Scotland, though I'm originally from Luxembourg. I'm a social scientist by day and I'm really into all things crafty and artsy. My blog reflects that: it's basically one part outfit pictures (which are usually very colourful), one part crafty artiness (at the moment I'm into photography, but I'm also a knitter, and a beginner sewist) and one part think pieces on fashion, society and feminism.

MR: Everyone has a different perception of 'vintage shopping'. What is your definition of 'vintage'?

F: I would define vintage as anything older than 20 years. I've seen clothes from 2000 described as vintage and I definitely wouldn't class that as vintage yet. But to be honest, I'm not that bothered at how old something is. I have a few reproduction 1950s dresses from the 1980s, and I love them no less than my 1950s originals. The main thing that matters is whether I like something.

primary colours, styled by dave!

MR: How long have you been a vintage shopper?

F: I've been wearing second hand (as it was called then, the term vintage didn't exist yet) since I was born. I always loved getting hand me downs from my cousins and rediscovering my mum's clothes. Second hand isn't a very widespread thing in Luxembourg, so I didn't do much shopping myself when I was young. But when I moved to Edinburgh for university in 1999, I was like a kid in a candy store with all the charity shops everywhere. For a few years, I went thrifting probably 2-3 times a week, and would get LOTS of stuff. This is how I started learning about vintage, and recognizing different eras and styles. And around this time I discovered the blogosphere too, and made 'friends' with fellow thrifters via the wardrobe remix group on flickr.

MR:  What motivated you to begin shopping for vintage items?

I just always loved them. I love the dressing up aspect, the sense of history, that you can get something completely unique. And when I first started thrifting, I was a student, so I didn't have any money. The charity shops allowed me to build an amazing wardrobe at very low cost.

MR: You mention charity shopping alot. What is that?

F: Charity shops are what we call thrift stores in the UK.

vintage dress

MR: What are your top 5 tips for vintage/charity shopping?

* Keep an open mind. You never know what you might come across, and what weird and wonderful thing you'll end up loving. This goes especially when you're starting out. I bought some ludicrous stuff early on in my thrifting career, and lots of it went back to the charity shop after a few wears, but some of it I still have.
* Ignore sizing labels. I'm a UK size 12, but will try on anything from an 8 to a 16. Vintage sizes are sometimes very different, and with the rise of vanity sizing, labels are becoming increasingly meaningless. I've become pretty good at judging whether something will fit me from holding it up. But that skill has taken time to develop, so I'd say just try things on to start off with,
* Educate yourself about fabrics and sewing techniques so you can spot well-made clothes that will last. Getting to know which brands do good quality can be helpful too, but nothing beats actually looking at the clothes.
* Only buy what you love. Related to the last point, don't get sidetracked by designer labels, they don't guarantee quality, or style. YOU need to love the thing and no one else.
* If that last thing is a challenge, I find it helpful to think of how the thing would fit in with the rest of my wardrobe. If I can't think of three outfits it can be incorporated in, I'll leave it for someone else to enjoy.

15.10.11: black and red and a wee bit of silver

MR: Tell us about some other vintage bloggers that you like to visit.

I'll recommend some British/Irish ones:
* PennyDreadfulVintage is an amazing vintage etsy seller and blogger
* TheComptesseDeFerveur always shows off great charity shop finds
* VintageVixen has the most luck at car boot sales and is a general thrifty goddess
* RetroChick always shows off great vintage style, often with new (reproduction) clothes, which can be more accessible. I love her hair tutorials.

Now tell me, what's your idea of vintage?

Everybody, Everywear (again): I'll Be Your One Stop Candy Store...

Thrifting is my way of life. It's therapeutic for me-it soothes my soul. It's my chemical romance. I'm in love with the thrift-I obsess over her each and every day. I've been thrifting for close to 6 months and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I anxiously wait for the time clock to say that I can stop working so that I can make my weekly run through town. 'Weekly espcapades' is what I like to call them. Some weeks they turn into daily endeavors. I'm an addict. Thrifting is like a drug to me. The thrill of finding someones discarded vintage Oscar de la Renta luggage or even a cutesy old school romper gets me all tingly inside.

Have you ever thought about why people get rid of such nice things?

On numerous occasions, I've found items with the tags still in tact, never worn before. I will admit that I'm a little on the selfish side. I like to get at least one wear out of an item before I chuck it. Maybe even two. I thought about doing a list of thrifting rules and tips that I've learned thus far but everyone does that so I'll pass. Me posting yet another boring list of tips would be like hearing a broken Lady GaGa record-it will make you want to pull your freaking hair out. I've tried to be a good girl and follow the rules of thrift but I think I've just about broken EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY RULE and debunked 99.9% of the myths that I have read since the inception of this ever growing obsession.

For instance...being patient. Sometimes I'm hella impatient and get frustrated with fumbling through racks of smelly clothing. So I only end up with one item. Like this kick a$$ belt that I found for 45 cents.

Thrifted Belt (I LOVE BELTS)

Like really, whooooo gives this stuff away? And is it cool if I come over and go through your 'junk bags' before you take them to the donation drop off? That way I won't have to 'be patient' in the thrift store annnnd I won't have to pay. I like FREE!!

What about the washing all thrifted items before wearing them rule? I admit-sometimes I don't. Especially when the tags are still attached. I found this teal H&M vest with new tags and guess what....

Thrifted Vest&Tshirt

I didn't wash it before I put it on. Just Frebreeze and Go. Is that gross?

This clutch was thrifted too. It's mainly fabric material and I didn't wash this baby either.

Thrifted Clutch

I did however, with complete certainty, make sure that I cleaned these thrifted wedges up before I put them on.

Thrifted Wedges

Even though they didn't show any signs of wear, I still don't know how many people tried them on before I purchased them. A little alcohol and a cloth soaked in super boiling hot water did the trick.

How do you clean your thrifted finds?

Another thrifting rule that I absolutely don't care to follow is to go on 'shipment days'. By show of comments, how many of you know of a thrift store that has designated shipment days? Last I knew, they got shipment everyday and to my knowledge only certain chain stores like Goodwill and CHKD have a specific rotation pattern with regard to shipment. The items that have been on the floor the longest get discounted first-so on and so forth. Honestly, it doesn't matter what day of the week I go-I always find something. Some days I find more than others but I haven't found my results to be relevant to which day of the week I shop on. Here's another instance...with the exception of the super long flared jeans from NY&Co, I found each piece of this 'fit on different days at different locations.

"Where are your shoes?"-random comment made by my professor

I'm sooo excited that Everybody, Everywear is hosting a 'thrifting' edition on Thursday because I can't wait to link up. This will give me a chance to find more thrifty divas to feature on my 'Word on the Street Wednesday' segment-all at once. It will be like a one stop shop. It's gonna be so sweet. And I'm gonna be like a kid in the candy store. HYYYPPPPEEEEE!!!!

SIDENOTE: I would love to tell the world about your pretty little blog. Wanna be featured. Shoot me a personal email to thriftyandshameless@gmail.com or you can just click on the cutesy little envelope in my sidebar.

What 'thrifting rules' have you broken lately?

Savin' Maven Monday: It's Been Awhile Since I First Saw You...

Wow you guys. I feel like I haven't done a Savin' Maven post in a month of Mondays. Honestly that's because I haven't really been doing lots of shopping. The sales haven't been great and the coupons have been lackluster to say the least.

I did however venture into Farm Fresh this past week Wednesday. Farm Fresh Wednesday's are my favorite because they double coupons up to $1.00 so there are some really great deals to be taken advantage of.
Here's what I got:

Savin' Maven (Farm Fresh)

Savin' Maven (Farm Fresh)
I spent a total of $21.60 on the above pictured items. The cereals were 4 for $10. They came up to $6 after my coupons and with the purchase of the cereals I received a FREE gallon of milk and a $2 coupon to use on my next purchase. The remainder of the items (with the exception of the toothpaste, pie, and Turkey Hill juices) were on a 'buy 10 get $5 off special'. For some reason I just can't help myself when it comes to toothpaste. Do you all know that this stuff is literally free most times. I promise. It's always on special at Farm Fresh and there are always coupons for it in the Sunday paper-usually for $1.00 off. So if you shop Farm Fresh on Wednesdays that $1.00 off will double to $2.00 off making the toothpaste next to nothing. I swear, I have at least 20 tubes already. I plan to donate most of them though because there's no way in hell I can use all that paste in a timely manner.  Speaking of which, does toothpaste expire

Next stop-Target. This is my go to store when I'm not thrifting. I spent $1.85 there. What a helluva total for all this:

Savin' Maven (Target)
The Gillette gels were on clearance and I had a B1G1 FREE coupon. Same goes for the Old Spice. I'm definitely not gonna use this stuff but it will make for some good impromptu gifts for my babe. Also, I had a $10 off Target coupon for the towel rack. One more thing I forgot to add...I did purchase 20 4x6 pictures (which I plan to use on a future DIY project) that are not shown but the total is still the same because they were FREE after I used my ($2 off of 20 prints) coupon.

Pretty good week I thought.

All in all my total for these purchases was  $77.44
My total out of pocket was $23.47
For a total savings of $53.97 (70% savings)

Did you find good deals on anything this past week? Please share.

I think my tips would be more useful if they were specifically tailored to your questions so feel free to ask me any coupon or shopping related questions and I will post the answer(s) the following week. Keep in mind that I'm no expert but I'm willing to share what I know. You may email you questions to thriftyandshameless@gmail.com.

Weekend Whimsies: Walk Across the Room like Naomi Campbell

So the girls and I attended a new store opening/fashion show last week and it was more than amazing to say the least. The store Bevello, is located right in the heart of Towne Center within walking distance of two of my favorite restaurants, The Cheesecake Factory and PF Changs. They were showcasing their new line of summer/fall fashions and also celebrating the opening of their gorgeous new store.

(SIDENOTE: Visit IFB's 'I Love My Neighborhood' segment to see what other cool places and events your favorite bloggers have visited and become inspired by this week)

The owner was soooo cute and even offered us 20% off of EVERYTHING in the store to thank us for celebrating with her. While linking up with IFB's Project they asked us to tell why this specific place that we visited has brought us inspiration. You see this cute girl here:

She's young, fun, and doing what she loves. She's the owner of a beautiful boutique in an even more beautiful location. She inspires me to keep going after my dreams and do what I love to do. Life is too short to be stuck doing things that you hate. This is how people become miserable and eventually turn out to be evil little old people. You know the ones who sit in the rocking chair giving you the mean grimace every time you visit; the ones who never have anything nice to say. Yeah, those are the ones who hate their lives because they grew up either working at jobs that they despised or because they continued to stay  in a horrible relationship and now they're stuck with an evil little old man that constantly hides their denture glue.

Do what makes YOU happy! Because at the end of the day, no one has to deal with you but YOU!

What types of things make you happy?

It was a little hard for me to capture all of my fave runway looks because there was a huge mass of a man standing in front of me. Each time I moved he swayed right along with me and managed to appear as a big blob of fabric in almost all of my runway shots. Ugghhh, why was he there...in my way and on my nerves!!!

I did get these though.

That coral dress was SUPER SEXY!!! But this is the dress that I had my eye on....

With a price tag of $128, even 20% off would be a stretch for me considering my obsessive need to be thrifty. I just admired it from afar all night long. All in all, the event was great. There was free food catered by California Pizza Kitchen and even better....free champagne of which I had at least 4 glasses. Annnnndddd it was mixed with a splash of watermelon juice. Talk about tasty!

Oh how I wish I had more pics of the actual event to share with you. Oh well.

Here's what I wore:

A slight mix of lace and floral. See how everyone else is mixing their patterns here.

Trousers&Belt-Thrifted/Tank-TJ Maxx
I love these trousers. Even though they are polyester and hot as all get out, I love the fact that they are high waisted and they stop right at my ankle so as to create a clean, classic look and showcase whatever shoe that they're worn with.

The shoes (which are barely visible here) are sky high nude platform stilettos that I got on clearance at Target. I had been eyeing these babies forever. I've seen many of my favorite bloggers with them but I just couldn't bring myself to pay full price for them. Soooo, I waited and voila....

Purse-Thrifted/Shoes-Target

Don't we look shopped out! My girlfriend purchased that super sexy coral dress pictured above. I, on the other hand, purchased nada. I just held her bag  for visual effect-because I thought it would look more uniform if all of us held bags. I'm such a cheater!!

What do you and your girlfriends do for fun?
