BDIB: I'll Bet You Think This Post Is About You...Don't You?

BDIB-Arm Party

VAIN-adjective, excessively proud of or concerned about one's own appearance, qualities, achievements, etc.; conceited: a vain dandy.

Vanity is a deadly sin, ya know.  And, as a blogger, taking (sometimes) daily photos of myself, I often wonder if I'm living in sin.  Am I conceited because I like sharing my style with my world of followers? This blog is my world, right!? And I can do what I want to, right!? I'm not so sure anymore.

Recently, I read a thread by blogger friend, Kelly, that was posted to the FBFF group (initiated by Katy of ModlyChic) entitled 'How did you come out'? I'm not even sure that I responded or commented on this thread but I was rather amazed at the number of bloggers who have yet to 'come out' to their closest friends and family for fear of being labeled as a vain person.

Should I feel guilty for not 'coming out' to my friends? I'm not sure that I'm ready for them to know this side of me yet. I'm not so comfortable with them knowing my innermost thrifting secrets. Knowing that I thrift 89.8 % of my wardrobe-they may think that I'm dirty and grungy. They may think that I'm cheap. I'm not sure what they will think, honestly, but I will leave it as such for now.

My babe hates taking pics of me. He says that it's vain. Don't get me wrong, I don't spend a majority of my day primping and powdering myself in the mirror. But I do like to take a couple of snapshots of myself when I'm stepping out. Is that so wrong? This is why I like to be alone during my photo shoots. I can ferociously swerve across 3 lanes of traffic at the sight of a gorgeous location. I can zone out and get into my own groove-just me and my 'point and click'. I can randomly laugh when nothing at all is funny and I can take as many photos as I'd like.  And not be thought of as.....VAIN.

Though I personally don't consider myself vain and I shouldn't give a f*^k what others think about me, I'm human-so I do. Hence the reason why I always try to have something interesting to say in my posts. I would absolutely hate to bore you with daily posts that focus solely on what I'm wearing and where I purchased it from. That was not my purpose upon creating this blog. I love to write and more than that I love sharing knowledge and opinions, and seeing the perspectives of others when it comes to topics that I feel strongly about.

  1. I totally agree about the vanity issue - for me it's so much more about the clothes but I'm sure to some it seems like I'm just obsessed with myself. Haha!! I am so excited for your manicure party, what a great idea! Will definitely be linking up! -Rachel (adistinctstyle.blogspot.com)

  3. To each his own!!! Do what you love and love what you do.  It doesn't matter what others think because its making you happy and heck its making your followers happy too.  People check in to see what you're wearing and how you've been thrifting.  I know I check in because I want to get better at thrift shopping.  So I say you go girl.  Do you.  Its nothing different then when you know you look cute, taking a pic of your outfit then posting it on facebook for the world to see!!!  keep posting!!!!

  6. I used to feel the same guilt, especially when a ex- friend sent an email regarding how full of myself I was (using my blog as ammo).  To me it was something fun that made me feel good and creative, not at all ashamed--until someone MADE me feel ashamed.  In my real life most everything is about my kids, my husband, my job, the military, etc.  But my blog is my corner of the universe.  My canvas.  My journal.  My outlet.  It's also brought me ideas, support, new friends and ultimately, a lot of joy.  So I don't question myself anymore.  ♥

  8. My man goes along with the occasional picture taking drama but mostly I do things by myself for the many reasons you have stated above!

    Love those fierce red heels.

And, as far as I'm concerned its not vanity, its a way of sharing our opinions and individual creativity! Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

  9. That's so funny.  I just finished blogging a post with photos of myself...and mentioned that I was being vain!  My friend and I used to have conversations about being "vain and superficial."  So while I love reading fashion blogs and think nothing of it... I do get a bit embarrassed about blogging my own outfits.  And I haven't told any of my friends about my blog.  I used to have a very public blog which was necessary at the time, but tough.  So this time I just wanted to feel a bit more free.

In other news.  I am loving your accessories.  Those shoes!  I'm in love!  And those bracelets are so yummy too.

  11. I don't think it's vain at all! Though I do think it's a bit weird, which is why I never told anyone for years and still don't advertise it much. I much prefer taking the photos myself too, I have very specific ideas of what I want!

  15. Yes my blog brings me great joy but I'm still afraid of what close friends may ultimately think of me if they continuously see me taking pics of myself and talking about ME! I guess it's no different from Facebook though, where it's not unusual to see people post a thousand and one photos of themselves and make status updates about themselves. Thanks for sharing your story!

  16. i don't usually feel vain when i'm taking pictures or posting on my blog, but only because i'm not looking at the pictures thinking, "oh, i am SO hot.  hey everyone, come see how good i look!"  writing is something that i, like you, also love.  starting a blog was a great way for me to share my love of fashion and also get the creative juices flowing (my "real" job is not very creatively challenging).

the only time i feel silly about taking pictures is when people are watching me.  that weirds me out a bit.  and also explaining to people what a "fashion blog" is.  that's kind of odd, too.  i don't really share it with my family because i'm a pretty private person (oh, yes, i do see the irony).  but they have access to it and most of my friends know about it, too.

i think you're doing just fine!  blogging is fun, and should always be fun!  but if you feel vain, i guess it's important to re-assess why you blog in the first place.  which i think you did a really good job expressing in this post.  thanks for sharing!

  17. OMG...people watching me take pics weirds me out too! It's sooo creepy and I feel like people don't even think about coming out until I'm already mid pose at which point I feel like I have to pack up and find another location! Lol
And no I don't feel or think that I'm vain at all-it was more so a post about how others may view it, hence the main reason not alot of my friends know.
Thanks a bunch for your insight;-)

  20. It's definitely a sensitive topic. And most everyone seems to be straddling the fence about it. I don't think I would ever be totally comfortable doing outfit posts everyday either but I guess to each his own ya know!
    Thanks for visiting and sharing!

  21. I think one shot is usually enough. Sometimes a set of three, under the right circumstances. Bloggers who take twenty pictures of the same outfit in the same post day after day can get annoying.

I also think a successful blog requires alternating between post types. I've begun going back and organising my previous posts into I Wear (photos of myself), They Wear (photos of others), Essential Wear (photos of items I want to purchase or have purchased), Behavior (how to articles on fashion and style), History (old pictures, historic places, style icons), Travel (places I've been, am, or going to), and Japan (because living there pretty much infects everything else). This why not every post is the same type of post day after day after day.

  24. Oh I hate to see 20 pics all of the same fit! It's like enough already. I saw it perfectly fine in the first 5 shots! Lol
I love your idea of organizing your posts..though I don't have nearly as many categories, I do the same thing!
    Thanks for visiting;-)

  25. That belt is too cute! I feel weird about taking photos of myself too sometimes but I enjoy reading others' blogs and seeing what they wear so that's how I justify it.

  28. That is an excellent point about Facebook!  I just started a blog myself www.SwishSeattle.com and have been on the fence about sharing it with friends and family for fear they would see me as vain. Facebook is the epitome of self-centric, and 750 million people have a page there, haha.  :-) I never thought of that before.

I found you on IFB, thanks for a great post!
